A fast-spreading, sweet-smelling, hardy perennial, up to 1m (3ft) tall, with bright green, wrinkled, regularly toothed, oval leaves 5–9cm (2–3½in) long. Tiny lilac, pink or white flowers are produced in tapering spikes in summer. Spearmint (Mentha spicata) is native to western and central Europe but widely naturalized elsewhere. Red mint (M. x smithiana), and American applemint (M. x gentilis) – also confusingly called red mint – have a spearmint aroma too, as does Bowles ’mint (M. x villosa var. alopecuroides). Applemint (M. suaveolens), pineapple mint (M. suaveolens ‘Variegata’) and ginger mint (M. x gracilis ‘Variegata’) have a fruity spearmint aroma, while doublemint (M. x gracilis ‘Madalene Hill’) combines both spearmint and peppermint flavours.
